Step By Step Guide For Cleaning and Sanitizing Your CPAP Equipment.

We learned in our last blog post why it is very important to your health and wellness as a CPAP patient to properly clean and sanitize your CPAP equipment on a regular basis.  Now that we know it’s crucial to your health, let’s take a look at how and how often we should clean and sanitize our equipment.

Always follow the recommendations and instructions given by the CPAP manufacturer which can usually be found in the instruction manual or on their website.  For now, we are going to go over some general guidelines.

How often should I clean my CPAP equipment?

CPAP Mask: Daily

CPAP Mask Cushions or Pillows: Daily

Water Chamber: Weekly, Empty and Dry Daily 

CPAP Hoses/Tubing: Weekly, Hang to Dry Daily 

Guide to Cleaning and Sanitizing

CPAP MASK, CUSHION, or PILLOW

DAILY CLEANING:

  1. Unplug your CPAP machine from the power source.
  2. Disconnect the mask from the tubing/hose from the CPAP machine.
  3. Disassemble your mask into 3 parts: headgear, cushion and frame. 
  4. In a sink, wash mask, cushion and headgear to remove any oils. Gently rub with mild soap and warm, drinking quality water. **Avoid using strong cleaning products because it could damage the mask and leave harmful residue.** 
  5. Rinse thoroughly with warm, drinking quality water. 
  6. Place the cushion and frame on top of a dry towel on a flat surface.

DAILY SANITIZING:

After your routine cleaning, sanitize the mask, cushion or pillow by placing it in The LiViliti Paptizer- CPAP Sanitizer and running it on a Fast Sanitize cycle. Make sure that when you place the mask, cushion or pillow in the Paptizer that it is dry.

TUBING

WEEKLY CLEANING:

  1. Unplug your CPAP machine from the power source.
  2. Disconnect the tubing/hose from the mask and the CPAP machine. 
  3. In a sink, rinse the inside and outside of the tubing/hose with mild soap and warm, drinking quality water.  **Avoid using strong cleaning products because it could damage your tubing and leave harmful residue.** 
  4. Rinse thoroughly with warm, drinking quality water.
  5. Place the tubing on top of a dry towel on a flat surface.

WEEKLY SANITIZING:

Once a week after your routine cleaning, sanitize the tubing/hose by placing it in The LiViliti Paptizer- CPAP Sanitizer and running it on the Auto Mode cycle. Make sure that when you place the tubing in the Paptizer that it is mostly dry. The Auto Mode cycle will dry small water particles that may be left after washing and air drying your tubing/hose.

WATER CHAMBER

DAILY CLEANING:

  1. Unplug your CPAP machine from the power source.
  2. Disconnect the water chamber from the CPAP machine. 
  3. In a sink, rinse the water tub with mild soap and warm, drinking quality water. **Avoid using strong cleaning products because it could damage the water tub or leave harmful residue.  
  4. Rinse thoroughly with warm, drinking quality water.
  5. Place the water chamber on top of a dry towel on a flat surface.

 WEEKLY SANITIZING:
